Stoops, Stairs & Landings
Concrete Steps Calculator
Calculate the exact solid concrete volume and materials required for front entry stoops, porch steps, and landings using geometric prism calculations.
How Concrete Steps Volume is Calculated
A staircase is not a single rectangular prism; each successive step from bottom to top sits on top of all the concrete below it. To calculate the exact solid volume of concrete for steps:
Profile Area = Riser (in) × Tread (in) × [N × (N + 1) ÷ 2]
Stair Volume (cu in) = Profile Area × Step Width (in)
Landing Volume (cu in) = Landing Length (in) × Landing Width (in) × Total Height (in)
Total Volume (cu yd) = (Stair Volume + Landing Volume) ÷ 46,656
NYC Building Code Stair Compliance
Under the NYC Building Code (Chapter 10, Section 1009), exterior stairs and stoops must adhere to strict dimensional tolerances for life safety:
- Maximum Riser Height: 7.75 inches (residential standard is typically 7.0 inches).
- Minimum Tread Depth: 10 inches (recommended 11 inches for comfortable descent).
- Riser Uniformity: The greatest riser height within any flight of stairs cannot exceed the smallest by more than 0.375 inches (3/8"). Uneven steps are a primary source of trip injuries and DOB building violations.
- Handrails: Required on any stairway with 4 or more risers.
